My neighbour Karl Marx. Gravely vandalised.

When I last saw Karl Marx’s impressive tombstone on 25 January 2019, I marvelled at how well preserved it looked for its age – Marx died in 1873. He had written the seminal work Das Kapital nearby, at the Highgate Library.

South Africans go to the polls on May 2 2019 for an election that allows every South African over the age of 18 to cast a ballot.  That of course has not always been possible… the first genuinely democratic election, allowing the majority of people, the black population, to vote, happened (just under) twenty five years ago.
